This will scare the crap out of you. They're not required to do brain wave testing. When you take someone off a vent before they are ready they can't breathe. They die. Just because you cannot breathe doesn't make you dead. It's WHY we have vents. To keep the living alive until they can breathe on their own. If you were brain dead, you wouldn't have a pulse. If you have abdominal surgery, they will paralyze you so you don't move - and that kind of sedation requires you be intubated - on a vent - until the surgery is over. Also, just because you don't respond to pain stimuli doesn't mean you don't have pain. They paralyze organ donors as well - so they don't move in response to pain stimuli.
